Happy Camper Ruth Bader Ginsburg, known as Kiki!

We know of so many well-known leaders and famous actors who have spent their summers at overnight camp. But when we heard about Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg at Camp Che-Na-Wah, we had to share. Her stories and the love for camp is everything camp represents today. Before she was a pioneer on the bench, an advocate for women’s rights, and a cultural icon she was Kiki, a happy camper. A camper that embraced every aspect CAMP.

Ginsburg spent 7 ½ weeks each summer at Camp Che-Na-Wah and continued to visit during the summers through 2015. Read the full article HERE for an inside look at the legacy she left behind for future campers.

Calling All First Time Camp Parents

The first summer you send your kids off to the most amazing adventure they will hold close to their hearts forever will bring many emotions. As much joy as this can bring you and them, it also brings feelings of nervousness and anxiety.

The Boston Globe recently spoke with some camp directors, their insight is spot on. They talk about how camp is a terrific, safe place for kids to try out new things. “Risk taking is what promotes growth, whether in business or in life,” says Bud Copeland, director of membership and engagement at the American Camp Association’s New England chapter.

Why Summer Camp May Be The Secret To A Longer Life

The American Camp Association is constantly working with camp directors and their staff on improving the quality of their camp. At their latest staff training conference, they discussed friendship skills (one of our favorite topics). Their findings were amazing. The similarities that experts say is the secret to a longer life is what CAMP gives. Just to name a few:

  • Face-to-face connection time.
  • Feeling a sense of acceptance and belonging.
  • Being outside, in nature.
  • Being more mindful, present, in-the-moment.
  • Lots of play: singing, dancing, games.
  • Adequate sleep.
  • Trying and experiencing new things.

The New Way Kids Unplug

Camp is a magical place kids go to for the summer. They may try new adventures, meet new friends, and explore the outdoors. But the campers also go to “unplug”. Yes, the campers actually look forward to putting their phones down for the week or the entire summer.

Most overnight camps, even the ones that offer STEM or Math programs, do not allow campers to have cell phones. Same rules apply for most counselors, no phones in the bunks or on camp.

We spoke to some campers and they say they don’t even miss their phones and actually look forward to “the phone break”. It’s the parents that have a harder time not being able to communicate with their kids at any time of the day. Allowing our kids to “unplug” forces them to make new friends, enjoy their surroundings, and communicate with each other.

It’s refreshing to hear the campers welcome the “No Phone” rule and look forward to it.  Read more HERE.

It’s Time To Say Goodbye

We love to share camp experiences from parents that have once been campers or who are experiencing camp for the first time through their kids.  Whatever their camp story, this time is truly special, you’re saying “goodbye for 7 weeks… hello memories for life”.  We had to share Melissa’s story, from her own camp story to experiencing it as a parent, we couldn’t agree with her thoughts more.  Check it out here. As do our campers, we truly live 10 for 2!

It’s visiting day, a fabulous day spent at camp.  Parents and campers excited to spend time together, do camp activities and holding tight up to the last second of saying goodbye.  It’s also a time where the half session campers say goodbye to their camp experience for the summer.  We loved what this formal camper had to say about being a half session camper when she was a kid and the emotions she felt.  Tales of a grown-up sleepaway camp kid, a must read!

Camp Playdates

Perfect-Scoop-1The more, the better!  Get a list of campers in your child’s age group and see who lives close by.  Scheduling a group playdate for ice cream or roller skating will be a blast. The more people your first-time camper gets to meet before the first day of camp the less anxious they will feel.  If you can’t schedule an actual playdate, schedule a facetime meet & greet.

Sealed & Delivered

Many of the camps suggest sending a letter a week before camp starts.  Campers love receiving mail and will love it even more if they have mail waiting for them. Remember, they call it “snail mail” for a reason.  Leave plenty of time for the letter to get to camp.

How Camps Give Back

Camps give kids new experiences, friendships that last forever, and camp fires. But, have you ever thought how camps give back to the community?  We were pleasantly surprised to discover all of the ways they do!

Each August, Camp Manitou hosts the Experience Camps for Grieving Children. The week is for children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver.  Camp Manitou gives these kids a wonderful opportunity to just be a kid, bring their smile back, and make new friends.

Even when camp is over, Camp Manitou was still giving back. This past Fall they were involved in Manitou Fall Service Day Weekend. Campers and parents volunteered their time to revitalize gardens and dog play areas, cleaned local beaches, and ran a 5K  to benefit cancer and other research.

Many camps participate in The Camp Champions program which helps to send hundreds of children in need to camp every year!  Campers will participate in special events or races throughout the Summer to raise money to help kids experience camp.

Camps got involved with the social connection too!  Camp Vega created a special hashtag and every time a picture was shared using it they would donate $10 to the Dunk Your Kicks campaign, which helps support pediatric cancer research. This past year campers have volunteered at

Campers at many camps have also volunteered at Camp Sunshine or donated to The Tutu Project.

Camp gives so much more than just s’mores, lake time, and color war cheers.  Camp gives back!
